IT'S A MOBILE NIGHTMARE - FOLLOW A PLAN TO MAKE THE MOST OF PHONE BILLS
17/07/2007

It's a mobile nightmare - Follow a plan to make the most of phone bills
By Josh Robertson

AFTER visiting stores, poring over pamphlets and trawling through websites, Mark and Michelle Limb can sum up their search for the right mobile phone plan in two words: "baffling ordeal".
The Bardon couple, who recently returned to Australia after half a decade living in cellular-savvy Japan, are confronting the prospect of becoming mobile phone users in this country.
There's a vast array of providers and packages to choose from but few clues as to which -- if any -- offer compelling value.
The reality behind the hype is that a lack of competition among telcos here is limiting real choices for consumers, says telecommunications analyst Paul Budde.
"If you analyse the packages, they're complicated, difficult to understand -- the small lettering and all that sort of stuff -- the underlying business model being that the telcos want to sell voice and they don't want to make things cheaper," Mr Budde says.
"They pay a lot of lip service but in reality the majority of people just pay 50 or 80 cents for a mobile call and 20 or 30 cents for a fixed call and the telcos love it."
However, Reg Robertson, spokesman for consumer website Phonechoice, insists that "it pays handsomely to be educated and informed".
Choosing the deal that suits you hinges most of all on knowing what your mobile call habits are -- how many calls, where, when and for how long.
It's the typical mobile user's burden -- depart from your monthly standard and you'll be punished for it.
The prepaid option at least lets customers know exactly how much money they'll spend over a given period.
Pay $100 a month (and no more) and you might get three hours and 20 minutes of local calls at 25 per minute (and no more).
The downside is the inconvenience and inflexibility, says Mr Limb.
Sometimes going to the shop to top up credit is the last thing on your mind; but then fail to use all your credit in the allocated time (usually no more than three months) and it's wasted.
Then there is the "cap", a slightly misleading term for this kind of phone deal.
True, a plan might allow you to make up to $300 worth of calls (charged at 40 per 30 seconds) and "cap" your bill at $49, but since you can make far fewer calls than that and still pay the same, a cap is better understood as a minimum monthly charge.
Make more calls than that, the cap comes off and you pay more.
Despite this, caps are increasingly popular, says Mr Robertson.
Mr Robertson says the market has now moved to "a kind of third generation of caps", with a higher included call spend at a slightly higher call rate.
A $49 cap which used to include $230 worth of calls at 35 per 30 seconds now offers $300 of credit at 40 cents per 30 seconds.
Translated, that's five hours and 28 minutes of local calls compared to six hours and 15 minutes, or an extra 47 minutes a month.
Mr Robertson says caps have meant that call rates "across the board have flattened".
Telstra, Optus and Vodaphone each charge 40 cents per 30 seconds on their $49 caps but provide $250, $280 and $300 worth of calls respectively.
On the same cap and the same rate, Dodo offers $400 of calls -- but $120 of this must be to other Dodo customers.
Conversely, you could lock yourself into a $249 monthly contract with iSim, worth nearly $6000 over two years, and pay 18 cents per 30 seconds for 11-and-a-half-hours' talk time a month.
One drawback with a cap is that customers usually won't receive an itemised bill.
It's the inflexibility that bothers Mr Limb.
"I don't want to spend $70 a month if I only make $35 worth of calls," he says.
Mr Limb resents the idea of having to calculate and stick to a standard month of mobile use.
"I don't know what I'm doing week to week if I sign up for a two-year contract, I don't know what I'll be doing in two years' time."
In the end, it's the
Slimtel VIP month-to-month plan that appeals most to Mr Limb -- a call rate of 11 per 30 seconds, no cap, no minimum monthly charge, no long-term contract.
Getting the most out of a mobile plan comes down to this: you have to know your usage patterns or mould them to fit your plan. The alternatives are an exorbitant bill or wasted credit.

DIALLING UP A GOOD DEAL COULD SAVE YOU
17/07/2007

Dialling up a good deal could save you
By Erica Thompson

WANT extra cash this Christmas? Try changing your mobile phone plan.
A study by consumer website PhoneChoice earlier this year, found Australians are wasting around $1 billion every year as a result of being on the wrong phone plan.
To get the best deal, you need to understand your call history or calling pattern, says spokesman Reg Robertson.
A recent survey commissioned by Vodafone found few people kept tabs on their spending habits.
Half of all Brisbane residents aged 16 to 64 say they never check their mobile bill and one third say they spend less than an hour researching and choosing a new plan.
Almost 60 per cent say they do not understand all the benefits of their current plan.
With mobile sales set to increase by more than 40 per cent this Christmas, Mr Robertson says consumers should do their homework before dialling up a deal.
However, he says increased competition in the mobile cap market should provide consumers with some welcome Christmas cheer.
He says the industry standard for a $49 cap used to be $230 worth of included credit, but the festive season has resulted in an increase.
Vodafone recently bumped up its $49 capped plan to include $280 worth of calls, while 3 is offering $300 credit per month for the same price and 200 minutes extra between 3 users.
Dodo and Slimtel have $49.90 and
$49 deals respectively with $250 credit.
Mobile service providers are offering some very good deals for Christmas and consumers should try to take advantage of them, Mr Robertson says.
Indooroopilly university student Chloe Williamson says switching to Vodafone's $49 cap has saved her about $200. She says it gives her the "freedom to keep in contact without the burden of huge bills".
Bust some caps
* 3: $300 credit per month with 200 minutes extra between 3 users for $49
* AAPT: $240 worth of credit on its $49 cap
* Dodo: $250 plus $50 intra-network credit for $49.90
* Slimtel: $250 credit on its $49 cap with insurance
* Gotalk: $45 cap offering $200 value at call rate of 30/30sec.
* Optus: $40 pack providing $200 value on its turbocharge prepaid offer.
* Vodafone: $280 per month for $49.

SLIMTEL HOSTS HISTORIC EVENT
13/02/2007

U.S CONSUL-GENERAL'S HISTORICAL ADDRESS TO PAKISTAN COMMUNITY

Friday 2 February 2007 marked the first time a U.S Consul General has addressed an event for Australian Pakistani Muslims. The exclusive event was organised by Slimtel's Managing Director, Kashif Amjad, and was held at the Crowne Plaza Norwest with the Pakistan Australia Association. Slimtel was the exclusive sponsor of the evening.

A variety of notable speakers also addressed the intimate gathering: Nick Kaldas (Assistant Police Commissioner of NSW); Lucy Turnbull (Commissioner on the Commonwealth Commission on Respect and Understanding), and Azam
Mohammad (Pakistan Consul General).

Nick Kaldas touched on important issues such as the role of police integrating with the local community and working closely with various religious, ethnic, and community groups to assist them in preventing violent activity. Other issues that were discussed were lessons learnt from the Cronulla riots, ways to avoid similar situations, and how we all as a broader Australian community should deal with terrorism.

The chief guest for the evening, U.S Consul-General Stephen T. Smith, decided to accept the invitation to address the gathering following a luncheon for U.S Ambassador HE Robert D. McCallum, where The Ambassador was
asked by Kashif about the United States' relationship with the moderate Muslim world and what they were doing to rectify it. Kashif introduced Consul-General Smith as the key note speaker with his impressive biography.

Consul-General Smith talked about the relationship between the U.S and Pakistan, Australia and the U.S and the parallel that could be drawn. He also spoke about Muslims in the U.S and the differences in ethnicities, which also included profiles of various Muslim groups. Pakistani Doctors Association in North America was given as an example (www.appna.org). Discrimination was also discussed to the extent where the U.S has now set up a complaint service at the Consulate here if a person is mishandled at the airport. Consul-General Smith talked on a lighter note of the many cricket clubs in New York. Concluding his address, the Consul-General explained how various religions besides Islam use criminal activities such as terrorism to justify their cause for political or financial gain. Consul-General Smith already had the Sada-e-Watan previous article.

Lucy Turnbull, renowned businesswoman and former Lord Mayor of Sydney and was also kind enough to grace the occasion. Lucy spoke of her role as Commissioner on the Commonwealth Commission into Respect and Understanding. This Commission was set up following a request as an outcome of the last Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2005 and will present its findings at the 2007 CHOGM. Lucy has been working on this initiative which seeks to break down the barriers of conflict and provide peaceful resolutions, and the Pakistani community were privileged to be one of the first communities she has contacted as it is a fellow member of the Commonwealth. Lucy also handed out a survey to audience members as well.

Finally Consul-General Azam Mohammad spoke on Islam, in a very simplistic manner including the roots and meaning of Islam. He spoke at length on how suicide bombing is not part of the religion, and how a few fundamentalists
tarnish the image of Muslims worldwide. Consul-General Azam delivered a key message that Islam is about following a book, The Koran, and that one should gain meaning from it by the simplest rule of humanity - to each his own- that is, the Koran cannot be instilled in others, but it gains meaning by applying to the intensity of ones own life, faith and experiences.

This is hopefully the start of many dialogues on resolving community issues not just for Pakistanis or Muslims but all faiths and backgrounds living in Australia.

Clockwise from top left: US Consul General Stephen Smith, Lucy Turnbull, Assistant Police Commissioner of NSW Nick Kaldas, PAA President Ejaz Khan, Slimtel Managing Director Kashif Amjad, and Pakistan Consul General Azam Mohammed. Source: www.sadaewatansydney.com

Further Developments:

Amongst the great atmosphere of the dinner two good news stories already, with one person willing now to travel to the United States after the US Consul Generals speech on complaints on profiling at the airport, and one of
the VIP guests so moved by the Pakistani Consul General speech they bought a Koran on the weekend to read.

There are more dinners of this nature to come soon on various topics for which discussions have already commenced which are going to be on a different platform and set up.

MEDIA RELEASE: ETHNIC SIMS
15/05/2006

Slimtel, one of Australia's newest Mobile Virtual Network Operators is proud to announce a world first customised SIM catering for the needs of ethnic Australian's. Jinnah SIM is the first scheme in line with SlimWorld.

SlimWorld is part of Slimtel's vision of connecting global ethnic communities, without the excessive costs.

With rapid technology, most telecommunication service providers cut the geographic divide, without cutting the phone bills. Slimworld's philosophy - a wireless world, with a borderless bill- ensures you stay connected much easier, much longer and much cheaper.

Slimtel is pleased to reveal the first ethnic community to benefit from its SlimWorld vision: the Pakistan Community in Australia. Through Jinnah Sim, Slimtel provides a customised plan for anyone wanting to call Pakistan, with greater connection but lower fees. Jinnah Sim offers call rates of just 32c per minute to Pakistan (landline or mobile) direct from your mobile. Other features include a low $9.90 monthly access fee which includes $9.90 worth of calls, flat call rates of 19c/30seconds across Australia and many countries around the world. It also offers 20c for 5 minutes to any Slimtel mobile on the same account.

Kashif Amjad, Slimtel Founder and CEO, a second generation Pakistani says that the plan was designed for the modern day person, who is too busy to sit at home and punch in a 20 digit PIN for a low quality calling card voice connection. This allows the user freedom to call Pakistan any time from any location. and dial directly to numbers stored on their sim of loved ones back home. The competitive rate is cheaper than any other mobile carrier - as much as 80% below some, and priced below many landline rates.

Jinnah Sim gives you the world at your fingertips with simplicity, quality and versatility.

Moreover, Slimtel believes in comfort, choice and flexibility. Slimtel offers customers a variety of options such as the latest handsets, duration of service, capped fees, and much more, all without messy contracts, financial obligations or unnecessary pay out sums.

Slimtel symbolises accessibility and affordability. Slimtel offers more than just cheap rates. It is a service, which includes analysing your bill to ensure you "keep the weight off your phone bill". In fact if Slimtel is not going to be the best provider for you, we will advise you of what is the best for you. This is because responsibility with honesty is at the core of Slimtel's philosophy: You matter, because we care.

Slimtel is an Australian owned and operated MVNO on the Vodafone Network and commenced in 2005. Slimtel was established to succeed in a maturing mobile market in Australia. Slimtel negotiates competitive rates for its key target markets, and creates win-win solutions for its clients every time. Slimtel already has one of the lowest complaint rates in the industry. That's why Slimtel stands for: "Great Rates, Great Service". Slimtel has already won awards, and is dubbed to achieve future success. Slimtel is also an Endorsed Supplier to the Australian Department of Finance. Slimtel is also proud to have supported the Pakistan Community in Australia during the recent earthquake appeal in collecting funds and media support.
